Made to Measure Venetian Blinds

So, where did we get the name, “venetian blinds?” One theory is that the early Venetians came back with the idea for blinds from Persia during one of their trade voyages. Later this idea was brought to France by freed venetian slaves. Who really knows? The name stuck and this kind of blind, one with horizontal slats, became known as venetian blinds.

Home decoration has become such a diverse field that now every branch of home décor is considered a separate field in its own right. Take for example, the seemingly unimportant field of blinds. Have you ever imagined that blinds have now become an important field of home décor and it’s a full blown science? The exact measurements, new tools and gadgets used in the hanging of blinds, types of blinds, among other things, make life easier.

These days, two major trends in blinds have taken over the world. One is the old and traditional style where people take exact measurement of their windows and doors and then order the preparation of blinds. This method is still used in many households. The other is buying made to order venetian blinds online.

Wood blinds and shutters are still two of the most popular window coverings sold in America. However, there’s always a limit to how much people will spend on their window treatments, and these two products are among the most expensive. Further, sometimes wood is undesirable in high moisture areas or in rooms susceptible to damage by kids and pets.

Recently introduced by almost every manufacturer are quality alternatives to 2″ wood blinds. All have slats which imitate wood, but there are some big differences between them. They’re generally called Faux Wood Blinds, Alternative Woods, Wood-like, and a host of other names. They’re made of vinyl and vinyl compounds.

Some of the biggest sellers are Biowoods, Everwoods, Woodmates, NuWood by Levolor, and Lake Forest by Graber. Since all of these products use vinyl for at least a portion of their slats they have two inherent advantages over wood blinds: they cost less, and they resist moisture.

Real wood blinds offer the look of elegance. They are available in a beautiful array of colors, including glazes and come in various slat sizes ranging from 1″ to 3″. These blinds are approximately half the weight of fauxwood blinds. Therefore, they are a wonderful application for doors and large windows.

Today, venetian blinds are more commonly known as mini blinds. But it seems that depends on what side of the Atlantic you are on. In the UK, use of the word, “venetian blinds,” meant to describe a window blind with slats made of wood, plastic or aluminum, operated by strings or cloth, is more common. In the US, this same blind is more commonly called a mini blind. However the US description does not include wood slats, those are called wood blinds.

First, a little background information, faux wood blinds come in two forms: composite wood and vinyl, a type of PVC plastic. The composite wood variety is made from a blend of real hardwoods and plastic polymers to form highly durable slats and other components that make up the blind. PVC blinds are made exclusively from a vinyl polymer.
